News

According to BloombergNEF's 'India Transition Factbook 2026' (commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies; 13 Oct 2026), India ranks third in the world in cumulative contracted clean hydrogen volumes. In the first four months of 2026, Indian firms signed binding contracts to supply 0.3 million tonnes a year of clean hydrogen – more than firms in any other country (including green ammonia exports). Three major binding agreements to export over 1 million tonnes a year of green ammonia were also signed. Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted this on 16 Oct.

Key facts

India3rd globally in cumulative contracted clean hydrogen
2026 (Jan–Apr)Binding deals for 0.3 Mt/yr – highest of any country
Exports3 major green ammonia export deals – 1 Mt+/yr
ReasonAmong the world's cheapest green ammonia – cheap clean power, subsidies, competitive auctions

Background

  • National Green Hydrogen Mission: Union Cabinet approval 4 Jan 2023; outlay ₹19,744 crore; target – 5 million tonnes (MMT) a year of green hydrogen by 2030. Nodal ministry – MNRE.
  • SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) – ₹17,490 crore: incentives for electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production.
  • Science: hydrogen – atomic number 1, the lightest element. Grey hydrogen – from natural gas (steam methane reforming); blue – the same with carbon capture; green – by electrolysis of water using renewable power.
  • Green hydrogen hubs: in Oct 2025 MNRE recognised three major ports as 'Green Hydrogen Hubs' – Deendayal (Kandla, Gujarat), Paradip (Odisha) and V.O. Chidambaranar (Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu).

Tamil Nadu link: V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Thoothukudi, is one of India's three 'Green Hydrogen Hubs' – a key east-coast base for green hydrogen/ammonia production and export.
