At the World Habitat Day function of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 5 October 2026, the PMAY-U Awards 2026 were presented. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were among the States and UTs honoured for carrying out the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban. Minister of State Tokhan Sahu presented the awards.   • PMAY-U was launched on 25 June 2015 for 'Housing for All'.
  • PMAY-U 2.0 has four verticals: BLC (Beneficiary Led Construction), AHP (Affordable Housing in Partnership), ARH (Affordable Rental Housing) and ISS (Interest Subsidy Scheme).
  • Houses are registered in the name of the woman of the family or jointly.
  • World Habitat Day was set by the UN in 1985 and first held in 1986; it is led by UN-Habitat (HQ Nairobi).

Tamil Nadu link: Tamil Nadu carries out PMAY-U through the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (formerly the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, 1970, India's first such board). In the PMAY-U Awards 2021, Tamil Nadu was 3rd best performing State. A Tamil report says about 25,000 houses were approved for Tamil Nadu under PMAY-U 2.0.
