Background

  • History: India–Poland diplomatic ties began in 1954. PM Modi's visit on 21–22 Aug 2024 (the first by an Indian PM in 45 years, after Morarji Desai in 1979) raised ties to a 'Strategic Partnership'; an Action Plan for 2024–28 was adopted.
  • 'Good Maharaja': in World War II, Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji of Nawanagar (today's Jamnagar, Gujarat) sheltered hundreds of Polish children rescued from Soviet camps at Balachadi in 1942. Warsaw has a 'Good Maharaja Square' in his honour. The Valivade camp near Kolhapur was the largest Polish refugee settlement in India.
  • Geography–politics: Poland is a Central European country with about a 530-km border with Ukraine. During 'Operation Ganga' (2022) it helped Indian students leave Ukraine safely.
  • Economy: Indian investment in Poland exceeds US$3 billion; about 10,000 Poles work for Indian IT firms. Poland is to get €43.7 billion in loans from the EU's SAFE defence-procurement fund.

Tamil Nadu link: the visit made no direct announcement for Tamil Nadu. But the State matters in two of the agreed sectors: nuclear energy – Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli district (Russian cooperation, VVER reactors) is India's largest; space – ISRO's second launch port (for small launch vehicles) is being built at Kulasekarapattinam, Thoothukudi district.
