Gardens in Small Spaces

In many cities, families have begun to grow vegetables in small spaces. Balconies, rooftops and even window sills are being turned into kitchen gardens. Tomatoes, chillies, spinach and mint are popular choices because they grow well in pots and need little care.

People who keep such gardens say that the benefits go beyond fresh food. Gardening gives them a reason to step away from screens and spend time outdoors. Children learn where food comes from and become more willing to eat vegetables they have grown themselves. Kitchen waste, such as vegetable peels, can be turned into compost and used to feed the plants, so less rubbish is thrown away.

There are challenges too. Plants on a rooftop may dry out quickly in summer, and pests can damage a crop overnight. Beginners are often advised to start with a few easy plants and add more as they gain experience.
