  • Administration: The apex management body of Indian Railways is the Railway Board (1905). In the Seventh Schedule, 'Railways' is in the Union List (Entry 22) – only Parliament can legislate on it.
  • Station Master's job: responsible for safe train operation at the station – signals, line clear, despatch and reception of trains, station administration. Hence the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is compulsory.
  • Note: Earlier, Station Master posts were filled through the NTPC (graduate level) notice; this time a separate CEN (08/2026) has been issued.

Tamil Nadu link: RRB Chennai has 119 posts (Southern Railway – HQ Chennai). South India's first railway line was run by the Madras Railway Company between Royapuram and Wallajah Road (Arcot) on 1 July 1856. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Mettupalayam – Udhagamandalam) became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 (part of 'Mountain Railways of India'). India's first vertical-lift railway sea bridge, the new Pamban bridge (Mandapam – Rameswaram), opened on 6 April 2025.
