Background
- History: after World War I the 'Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes' was formed in 1918 – later Yugoslavia. After World War II it became a socialist federation under Josip Broz Tito. Yugoslavia broke up in 1991–92; when Montenegro left in 2006, Serbia became a separate state. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 – neither Serbia nor India recognises it.
- Non-Aligned Movement (NAM): first summit 1–6 Sep 1961 at Belgrade (then Yugoslavia) – 25 countries. Founders: Nehru (India), Tito (Yugoslavia), Nasser (Egypt), Sukarno (Indonesia), Nkrumah (Ghana). Its base was the 1955 Bandung Asian–African Conference. It has 120 members today.
- Geography: Serbia is a landlocked Balkan country. Belgrade stands where the Sava joins the Danube. The Danube rises in Germany's Black Forest and enters the Black Sea; it is Europe's second-longest river after the Volga. Novi Sad, on the Danube, is the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina.
- Polity: Serbia is a parliamentary republic. The President is directly elected for 5 years, at most two terms. The National Assembly is unicameral with 250 members chosen by proportional representation. SNS was founded in 2008 by Vučić and Tomislav Nikolić and has ruled since 2012.
