Background

  • Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS): chaired by the PM; members – the Defence, Home, Finance and External Affairs Ministers. It gives final approval to big defence buys. Sequence: DAC Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) → bidding → price negotiation → CCS approval → contract.
  • Warship types (in rising size): corvette → frigate → destroyer. A corvette is small and fast – suited to coastal defence and anti-submarine warfare. GRSE built the 'Kamorta' class (Project 28) – anti-submarine stealth corvettes; the lead ship INS Kamorta was commissioned in 2014.
  • Shipyards: GRSE (Kolkata) – a Defence Ministry PSU; it built and exported the patrol vessel 'CGS Barracuda' to Mauritius. GSL is at Vasco da Gama, Goa. Science: 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km per hour.

Tamil Nadu link: no Tamil Nadu shipyard is part of this order. INS Parundu, the naval air station at Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram district (commissioned under this name on 26 March 2009), watches over the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait; it is under the Eastern Naval Command.
