Background

  • Execution: it is the first corridor approved as a public–private partnership (PPP) under the Centre's 2017 Metro Rail Policy; the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) built it with the Tata Group. It has 23 stations, 17 of which open in the first phase.
  • Geography: Pune lies on the Deccan Plateau in Maharashtra at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers; the combined Mula-Mutha flows into the Bhima (a Krishna tributary). The Khadakwasla dam is on the Mutha.
  • History: Pune's Aga Khan Palace (built 1892 by Aga Khan III) – Gandhiji was interned here from 9 Aug 1942 to 6 May 1944 during the Quit India Movement; Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died here. Pune was also the Peshwas' capital.

Tamil Nadu link: Venkoji (Ekoji I), the younger half-brother of Maratha king Shivaji (both sons of Shahaji), captured Thanjavur in the 1670s (c. 1675) and founded the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom, which lasted until British annexation in 1855 – a historic Maharashtra–Tamil Nadu bond.
