Background
- Jan Suraksha schemes: PMJJBY (life cover), PMSBY (Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana – ₹2 lakh for accidental death/total disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability at ₹20 a year; age 18–70) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) – all three were launched by PM Narendra Modi in Kolkata on 9 May 2015. They were announced in the Union Budget 2015–16.
- Economy: these covers are linked to PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY, 2014) bank accounts – the 'Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile' (JAM) base. The insurance sector is regulated by IRDAI (HQ Hyderabad). 'Insurance penetration' = premium ÷ GDP.
- Constitution: under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, two Union Territories were created from 31 Oct 2019 – J&K (with a legislature) and Ladakh (without). UTs with legislatures: Delhi, Puducherry, J&K. 'Social security' – Directive Principle Article 41 (right to work, education and public assistance in old age, sickness and disablement).
Tamil Nadu link: the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), the main PMJJBY insurer, was formed on 1 Sept 1956 under the LIC Act, 1956. The 'LIC Building' on Anna Salai, Chennai (1959), which houses its Southern Zonal Office, was India's tallest building when built.
