The Union Ministry of Steel released the 'Draft National Steel Policy – Vision 2047' for comments (Oct 2026). It will replace the National Steel Policy 2017. By 2047 it targets raising crude steel capacity from about 220 million tonnes (MT) to 604 MT (about three times), per-capita steel consumption from about 116 kg to 302 kg, and cutting CO2 emissions from 2.54 to 1.54 tonnes per tonne of steel.
Key facts
| Capacity | 604 MT (2047) – about 220 MT now |
| Production / use | Production 531 MT; finished-steel consumption 505 MT |
| Per capita | 302 kg (about 116 kg now) |
| Emissions | 2.54 → 1.54 t CO2 per tonne (39% cut) |
| Earlier policy | NSP 2017 – 300 MT capacity and 160 kg per capita by 2030–31 |
Background
- India is the world's second-largest crude steel producer after China. About 92% of its coking coal is imported.
- History: TISCO – 1907, Jamshedpur (Jamsetji Tata). The Second Five-Year Plan set up Bhilai (USSR), Rourkela (West Germany) and Durgapur (Britain) steel plants.
- Green steel: green-hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) and carbon capture (CCUS); India's 'Green Steel Taxonomy' grades steel by emissions. There is a PLI scheme for specialty steel.
Tamil Nadu link: SAIL's Salem Steel Plant makes stainless steel; Kanjamalai in Salem district has iron ore (magnetite). Tamil Nadu's automobile industry is a major user of steel.
